SLAVES OF HISTORY

Ecclesiastes 1:9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

One of the loudest voices and preachers is history. It is said that history speaks but men would not just listen. Those that listened would not just learn. Those that refuse to learn and allow history to repeat itself are servants of history. History is the whole series of past events connected with a particular person or thing. History is so important that educationists of old thought it very necessary to evolve it as a subject for events of people, places and community and nations are studied. Failing to know the real meaning of history has made a lot of people fail and become slaves and servants of history. History (from Greek, historian, meaning “inquiry; knowledge acquired by investigation”) is the study of the past. History is an umbrella term that relates to past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of information about these events.

God did not hide the concept and importance of history to us and the generations that past as revealed in His Holy Bible. Deuteronomy 4:9 (AMP)…“Only pay attention and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen, and they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your grandchildren [impressing these things on their mind and penetrating their heart with these truths]. Reading through Psalm 44:1-3, we see that the Israelites of old never forgot telling their children their story. But more than often, these children and generations that followed completely forgot what history has taught them. These children seriously messed up, they forgot God. For example, they turned the brazen serpents made by Moses in the wilderness (Numbers 21:9) to become an idol they worshipped in the time of Hezekiah (2 Kings 18: 4), and they called it Nehushtan, meaning a brazen thing, an ordinary copper.

So many people are toying with history. Things we have seen and heard happened, we thought we are bullet and arrow-proofed against them and they cannot happen to us. So many of us are like Belshazzar. When he ascended the throne, one day he had a party and with his wives, concubine and officers were drinking wine with the vessels taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem and they were worshipping the gods of gold, silver and woods. This angered God and a finger appeared by the wall and wrote God’s judgment upon him. When Daniel came to help out in the interpretation of what was written (read Daniel 5:18-31), he said to Belshazzar a lamentation… And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this (Dan.5:22). He knew what happened to his father, Nebuchadnezzar, but he did not learn from his life. What have you learnt from the life of your parents and other close relatives? What have you learnt from Bible stories? Romans 15:4… For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Employ the umbrella illustration of history by inquiring, analyzing and applying events of the past to obtain victory concerning your life in the present.
